The German TV station ProSiebeSat1 is offering from now on free TV series on their website via On-Demand-Stream. The current offering includes only own-productions like “ComedyStreet”, “Germany’s next Topmodel” and “Switch Reloaded”. But ProSieben is not the first German TV station offering such a service. RTL-now.de, where RTL shows and series can be watched On-Demand, went already online in 2007.
The selected series are online for one week after the first broadcast on TV. This feature is indeed a benefit for the TV stations, as the series would otherwise be watched on e.g. YouTube. The main goal is to satisfy watchers who have missed a specific episode. In addition to that new watchers can be targeted.
IPTV is a rapidly growing part of the Internet, which will influence the future of Web significantly. A big amount of TV series produced in the USA will soon be availabe for free on the platform hulu.com, which is a joint venture of Rupert Murdochs News Corporation and NBC Universal. It opens to the public on March 12th. Then its offering should even be expanded by productions from Warner Bros, which is another proof showing the growing importance of IPTV.
Other fantastic examples of On-Demand Video support are MTV’s Overdrive, Joost (founded by Kazaa and Skype creators) and new Worb.tv (World of Red Bull - IPTV).
